June 2010
RBB Selected for LA Mission College Campus Modernization
Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar, California selected RBB and Masters Contracting Corporation to complete $13 million in design/build projects as part of their Campus Modernization. The projects include a Sheriff Station, central plant, renovation of the Campus Services building, and new entrance. The new sheriff station will be LEED Silver certified.

The Genomics Building, completed by RBB for the University of California, Riverside was highlighted on Collegedesigner.com. The building, completed in 2009, contains teaching and research laboratories that serve the needs of students and researchers from all areas of science. It provides natural lighting, modular flexibility, and the ability to accommodate for changes in scientific equipment and technologies, supporting future advances in medicine, food and plant products.

Mission Hospital Receives 2010 Marvin M. Black Award
RBB and McCarthy Building were honored by the Associated General Contractors of America with the 2010 Marvin M. Black Award. The award recognizes the team's excellence in partnership on the Mission Hospital Acute Care Tower. This project engaged all team members in a partnership charter, establishing aggressive goals that were all met. Completed on schedule in 2009, the new Tower has received multiple awards for design and building technology.

RBB Architects was honored with a 2009 Firm Award from the AIA San Fernando Valley Chapter. This award recognized outstanding achievement an area of specialized design. Continuing our more than 50 years of expert healthcare design, RBB completed three major hospital projects within one year. Each project demonstrated unique achievements that exceeded the clients' goals. Our 2009 projects have set precedents in the areas of cost efficient, Lean planning and design as well as energy efficient, high performance hospital buildings.

Mercy Medical Center Merced
Receives 2009 AIA Design Awards
The new replacement hospital in Merced, CA, was recognized for its design strategy of "Doing More with Less." The facility is an exemplary model of Lean design practices, resulting in an overall savings of at least $30 million for Catholic Healthcare West. The 267,000 sf floor plan is an estimated 20% more efficient than comparable hospital facilities. The result is savings in both construction costs and operating costs over time. The project also features extensive sustainable design elements from strategic site planning and drought resistant landscape design to low-E glass, and energy efficient electrical systems. The estimated savings in energy costs total $4 million.

Mission Hospital Acute Care Tower
Receives AIA Design Award
This new hospital tower in Mission Viejo, CA, was honored for its achievement in providing the most technologically advanced medical facility in region. Clearly visible from the campus entrance, the Tower creates a new identity for Mission Hospital. Its bold, metal clad exterior conveys the state of the art services offered within. The interiors offer abundant natural light, creating an enhanced atmosphere for patients, families and staff.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Received Building of America Award
The Hoag Hospital Imaging Center, completed in 2009, was recognized by Construction Communciations as one of Southern California's most innovative design projects of the year. The adaptive re-use of industrial office space into a state-of-the-art outpatient center resulted in a high-end, spa-like facility to serve the Newport Beach cummunity. "The Imaging Center is a huge success from the patients' perspective, and ours too," said Michael Brant-Zawadzki, MD, FACR, Executive Medical Director, Neurosciences. "The ambience projects reassurance, technological leadership, and professional excellence, which goes to the heart of our organization's Vision Statement."

Northern Inyo Hospital Selects RBB to Complete Phase 2 Expansion
The critical access hospital located in Bishop, CA, has named RBB as its new architect or record to complete design and construction services for a $40 million expansion. Northern Inyo Hospital is a not-for-profit district hospital serving the Eastern Sierra region since 1946. The expansion will replace the main hospital building, expand emergency care services, and improve outpatient services including imaging and surgery, to meet the needs of the growing local population.

Mission Hospital Tower Awarded the Gold ConstrucTech Vision Award
ConstrucTech magazine honored St. Joseph Health System with a Gold award, recognizing the Mission Hospital Acute Care Tower for its high level use of BIM (Building Information Modeling). The Acute Care Tower features a complex exterior design and structural bracing system. It was through the use of BIM technology that RBB and McCarthy Building Companies could successfully deliver the project. Extensive 3D modeling was developed prior to construction to visualize and resolve any system clashes. The resulting design and construction coordination achieved the accelerated schedule goals, with minimal change order costs.

RBB ranked #38 in Design+Construction Giants 300
RBB Architects was ranked 38th among the Top 50 Architectural Design Firms in the U.S., by Building Design+Construction magazine. The annual Giants 300 survey spotlights the leading AEC firms in the non-residential building industry. The ranking is based on the volume of commercial, institutional, industrial, and multifamily residential building work completed in 2008. Design firms are ranked on billings for work that is performed in-house.

ARCHITECT Magazine ranks RBB #14
In a listing of America's Top 50 Firms RBB Architects was ranked number 14 by Architect Magazine, among the Top 50 firms in the U.S. The new annual ranking was published in May 2009, and represents a combination of criteria other than firm size. Top firms were recognized based on design quality (demonstrated by awards and recognitions), sustainability practices, and firms' overall financial success. RBB was one of nine California firms to be included in the national Top 50 list.

Boise State University Center for Environmental Science and Economic Development Breaks Ground
Boise State University hosted a ground breaking ceremony for the campus' new 97,000 SF building that will support education, research, and outreach for environmental science and economic development. RBB Architects and Boise based contractor, Engineered Structures Inc., were present with Boise State University Associate Vice President, James McGuire. The multi-disciplinary facility is the first new building in the campus' southeast expansion zone. The center will house geosciences and civil engineering laboratories; and office and work areas for Public Policy, Administration, and Political Science. The layout of the building promotes collaboration between scientists, engineers, and political science faculty on environmental policy issues. A flexible design program also allows reconfiguration in response to future changes in research needs. Sustainability principles related to site development, water efficiency, energy savings, materials and resources, and indoor air quality were important elements in the new building design.

RBB Ranked #1 by OSHPD to Serve as Independent Plan Reviewers
Based on a recent evaluation of architectural firms' specialized expertise in healthcare design, RBB was ranked #1 by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. A list of nine top design firms was selected and ranked based on qualifications to provide independent architectural plan check services. Having worked with OSHPD since its inception, RBB has processed at least $3 billion in construction through the agency. The scope of OSHPD plan reviews successfully completed by RBB includes both new construction and remodel projects, ranging from major hospital facilities to specific departments in all areas of healthcare.

RBB Architects was ranked among The Top 500 Design Firms once more by the Engineering News Record (ENR) Design Firms Sourcebook. The national survey is conducted annually by McGraw Hill Construction. RBB has been listed among The Top 500 Design Firms nearly every year since 1997.

Grand Opening for Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Imaging Center
RBB helped celebrate the opening of the new 35,000 SF Imaging Center. Upon receiving licensure for Phase 1 of the Newport Beach facility, the state of art Imaging Center began serving patients March 9th. This project has been delivered on schedule, following a successful OSHPD plan check process. The renovation of an existing office building into a satellite imaging center offers ease of access and more efficient service for patients who previously had to enter Hoag Hospital for imaging or testing. To improve patient comfort, and alleviate anxiety associated with diagnostic procedures, a calm hospitality environment was created. Interior design features warm wood details, soothing colors and a comfortable lobby check-in area to create a spa-like atmosphere.

Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Awarded Top Real Estate Project 2008
North Bay Business Journal honored Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with a 2008 Top Project Award in the area of medical services, citing an outstanding contribution to the North San Francisco community. RBB completed the renovation of approximately 24,000 SF of acute care hospital space on two floors. The renovation included complete demolition of the existing tenant space, and upgraded design for 74 medical surgical patient rooms and support functions. The project was completed on an accelerated schedule, delivered from concept to building permits within eight weeks. Following was the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department, and the 30,000 SF remodel of a Cath Lab and Surgery Department.

Construction of University of California, Riverside, Genomics Building Completed
Construction is complete on the new 100,000 SF science research building that will focus on plant and microbial genomics. RBB Architects Inc completed the project in collaboration with Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott as Design Architect. A ground breaking ceremony for the Genomics Building took place October 18, 2008. The new facility features a 100-seat auditorium, bioinformatics suite, classrooms, training center and research laboratories. A main lobby and covered entrance walkway will also offer interactive meeting spaces for students and staff researchers. The Genomics institute will serve the departments of botany and plant sciences, plant pathology, entomology and neurosciences. Research goals include development of new medicinal plants, safer nutritious foods, sustainable crops, foods with a prolonged shelf life, disease-resistant animals, and novel bio-based products.

RBB Honored with 2008 AIA Design Awards
Two unique design projects by RBB Architects were honored with 2008 AIA Design Awards. The Directors Guild of America headquarters in Hollywood, CA won the 20-Year Design Award, demonstrating its enduring, iconic presence in Los Angeles. The Xiamen Customs Building in China, an international design competition submission, won the AIA Design Concept award. This year's awards ceremony was held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. World renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who designed the Skirball Center, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and gave the keynote address. Over the past decade, RBB has been privileged to receive more than 25 AIA Design Awards for a variety of large institutional buildings.

Sylvia Botero, AIA, LEED AP, Named AIA San Fernando Valley Chapter President
The American Institute of Architects, San Fernando Valley Chapter elected Sylvia Botero, AIA, LEEP AP, as its 2009 president. Ms. Botero has been active in the Chapter for several years, dedicating her time to the many professional networking opportunities for members. This year, her energy and leadership will be especially valuable during a tough economy. She offers over 25 years of experience at RBB Architects, Inc. Ms. Botero has worked most extensively on University projects at numerous campuses including UC Riverside, UCLA, UC Irvine, CSU Northridge, Pomona College, and currently Boise State University. She has also managed complex hospital projects, most recently at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and Mission Hospital.

John Grounds, AIA, Named American Institute of Architects, California Council President
The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), elected John P. Grounds, AIA, as the new 2009 president for The AIACC, the nation's largest state architectural organization representing more than 11,000 members. Grounds AIA services began with local level service as Director, Treasurer, First Vice President and President of the AIA San Fernando Valley chapter. He then served as Associate Director, Director and Treasurer of The AIA, California Council, and as a Regent, Secretary/Treasurer of the California Architectural Foundation. As a project leader for over four years at RBB Architects, Grounds has been instrumental in numerous phases of the $100 million Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, California. Currently, he is providing master planning services for Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, California, including a new patient tower. John Grounds graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, became a licensed architect in 1995, and became LEED accredited in 2004.

RBB Architects Inc has been selected by Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, California to provide master planning services and design for a New Patient Tower, chapel and other improvements to its medical campus. The hospital is answering a need to expand its patient services and upgrade older buildings to meet seismic requirements. The new tower and reconfigured campus will feature an interior courtyard of Healing Gardens. The gardens serve as an environmentally sensitive transition between the new and old construction, and offers a therapeutic meeting place for visitors. This project will take part in the Savings by Design program, employing state-of-the art, energy efficient engineering and building materials. RBB will also utilize the LEED Green Building Rating System as a benchmark for sustainable design standards.

RBB Architects Inc has been contracted by Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, California to provide Design Services for a New Patient Tower to its medical campus. The hospital is answering a need to expand its patient services and replace older buildings that do not meet current seismic requirements. The new tower and reconfigured campus are the second phase of a current Phase 1, which consist of several internal department remodel projects and infrastructure upgrades as part of the Campus Master Plan. RBB has been working on Master Plan Projects at the Hospital since 2002. The new Tower will feature a patient new drop off and entry to the hospital. Landscaped gardens adjacent to the entry will serve as a therapeutic and reflective space for patients and visitors. This project will take part in the Savings by Design program, employing state-of-the art, energy efficient engineering and building materials.

The annual survey also reports that the largest project awarded to RBB Architects in 2007 was $235 million Northridge Hospital Medical Center Replacement Tower, and the largest project to break ground in 2007 was the $247 million Mercy Medical Center Merced Replacement Hospital.

RBB Architects celebrated the “topping off” ceremony of the new Mercy Medical Center Replacement Hospital in Merced, CA.  RBB Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Balbona, AIA joined Hospital President David Dunham, hospital staff and community members at the ceremony.  The 266,000 SF hospital features private patient rooms, new emergency department, imaging, surgery departments, new medical office building and new chapel.  The new hospital is anticipated to begin servicing the community in 2009.

RBB Architects helped Mission Hospital celebrate the ground breaking of the new Acute Care Tower in Mission Viejo, CA.  The groundbreaking event marks the official construction launch of the new Acute Care Tower.  Scheduled to open in late 2009, the 90,000 SF tower will feature 28 medical/surgical beds, 40 ICU beds, imaging, nuclear medicine, and a new chapel.

January 30, 2008
RBB celebrated the completion of construction on the 80 bed Center East Wing infill project at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa, California.  The project converted existing office space into hospital bed space to meet the much needed bed demand in Sonoma County.  Also in construction on the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital campus is a new Cardiac Institute and Emergency Department expansion.  Both projects are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2008.

AIA San Fernando Valley honored the 2007 Design Award winners in a ceremony at the Sheraton Universal City Hotel on January 19, 2008.  RBB Architects received an award for the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Newport Tech Center Renovation.  Additionally RBB nominated Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) for the Best Client Award which was also presented at the awards banquet.

John Grounds, AIA, has been elected First Vice President/President Elect of the American Institute of Architects California Council (AIACC).  Grounds most recently served as the California Council Treasurer.  Prior to his experience with the California Council, Grounds was active in the leadership of the AIA San Fernando Valley.  Since joining RBB, Grounds has served as project manager on several large healthcare projects, including the $100 M Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Plaza Tower project.

RBB announces the retirement of RBB President, Joel Jaffe, AIA, ACHA.  Mr. Jaffe retires after a remarkable 35 year career with RBB.  Prior to joining RBB in 1972, Jaffe had been in practice for 20 years.  With a specialized master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Public Health, Mr. Jaffe’s career focused extensively on the healthcare environment.  His credits include over 100 medical facilities including Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Hospital, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Mr. Jaffe will remain active in the community where he is involved with the AIA San Fernando Valley and the San Fernando Valley Economic Alliance.

RBB Architects Inc has been selected to design a new BioMed Tech park for the University of Southern California (USC).  RBB will provide full architectural and engineering services for the new 100,000 SF research building located on 11 acres adjacent to the USC Health Sciences campus.  The BioMed Tech research park will create a signature hub for biosciences innovation in the Los Angeles region.

Construction of Mercy Medical Center Replacement Hospital began with a groundbreaking on January 9, 2007 on the new site in Merced, CA.  Lloyd Dean, chief executive officer of Catholic Healthcare West, David Dunham, president of Mercy and Ellie Wooten, mayor of Merced were on hand to kick off the project.  The $262 million, 7 story tower will provide 185 beds and will see its first patients in December 2009.

The State of Idaho has selected RBB for the design and construction of the Boise State University Center for Environmental Science and Economic Development.  The project comprises a new $27,300,000 laboratory building of approximately 70,000 gross square feet and will include research and teaching laboratories, laboratory support spaces, office and administrative areas.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 18 for the new Genomics Building at the University of California, Riverside.  The Genomics building will house the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, which includes the Center for Plant Cell Biology, the Biotechnology Impacts Center and the Center for Disease-Vector Research.  The four story, 64,000 ASF building will be home to more than 200 faculty members, graduate student, postdoctoral and staff researches from the departments of botany and plant sciences, plant pathology, entomology and neurosciences.  The project was designed in collaboration with Shepley Bullfinch Richardson and Abbott of Boston.

St. Joseph Health System has awarded RBB the East Wing Renovation at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.  The project encompasses approximately 23,000 SF of gut renovation and an estimated construction cost of $14M.  The project is being built in conjunction with RBB’s other project at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, the Cardiac Institute.

RBB has been awarded the USC Cardiovascular Thoracic Institute(CVTI) located on the USC Health Sciences Campus.  The CVTI will feature four outpatient clinic modules which will be used for patient care in multiple disciplines.  In support of the core clinical program there will be a Patient Lounge and Library, a Heart Healthy Café, a Wellness Center and a Bed and Breakfast that will enhance the patient centered healing environment that characterizes this project.  The CVTI will be located next to the RBB designed Healthcare Consultation Center 2.

Antelope Valley Hospital Dedicates Women and Infants Pavilion
RBB celebrated the opening of the Antelope Valley Hospital Women and Infants Pavilion on July 20, 2006.  The 74,000-square-foot building is a culmination of planning, teamwork and hard work by hospital employees, doctors, administrators and the A/E Team.

The newly renovated building being celebrated now houses a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit with 21 bassinets; a nursery with 22 bassinets; 16 labor, delivery and recovery rooms; 39 private rooms that can accommodate overnight stays by fathers; and three operating room suites.  Each of the pavilion's 39 private rooms can be altered to accommodate two mothers to meet the demands of the growing Antelope Valley community.

Opened in 2000 as a project office, RBB Oakland has grown to be a full service facility with a tireless commitment to the projects and clients.  RBB Oakland has contributed to Highlands Hospital in Oakland, CA,  Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Sierra Nevada Women’s Center, St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, Antelope Valley Hospital, Lawrence Livermore Labs, and St. Agnes Memorial Hospital to name a few.

RBB Adds Tom Patterson, AIA to Oakland Office
Tom Patterson, AIA joined RBB’s Oakland office as a project architect.  Tom has thirty-one years of continuous experience in all areas of architectural practice including programming, planning, design, construction documents, project management, and construction contract administration. Tom is currently working on projects for St. Agnes Medical Center, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Mercy Medical Center Redding and Mercy Medical Center Merced.

Ms. Hui has been responsible for medical, residential and commercial facilities as a project architect, planner and manager for all phases of design from schematics through construction administration.

Ms. Tan has over 20 years of experience performing planning, equipment coordinating and CAD drafting responsibilities for medical, residential and industrial facilities.

Ms. Jhoun joined RBB in 1994 and has worked on a wide variety of architectural and interior design projects from inception through construction documents and is currently a member of our architectural planning team.

Ms. Phipps has more than 13 years experience working with an architectural team in all phases of Architectural Planning with strenth in educational facilities.

John Grounds, AIA has been elected to serve a 2 year term of office as Treasurer for the AIA California Council.  Prior to joining the California Council Leadership, John was President, Vice President, Treasurer and Director of the AIA/San Fernando Valley Chapter.   John is lead Project Architect for the $100 million Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital Plaza Tower project.

RBB’s #21 position is an improved position from the firm’s thirty first ranking in the previous survey. The survey ranked firms on their billings for design and planning in California based on a June to July fiscal year.

Amato, who currently serves as Director of Healthcare Planning, joined RBB in 1991. He became a senior associate in 2004. He holds a Masters of Architecture from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Belgrano University in Argentina. Amato is a member of the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) and currently serves as a Continuing Education Committee Member. He is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

With over 18 years of design experience, Annie Laurie Beckett directs RBB’s interior design group. Becket’s experience ranges from educational, hospitality, medical, office and public assembly projects. This diversification enhances her ability to successfully enter new design practice areas with ease. Beckett received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York and New York School of Interior Design.

RBB Architects Inc (RBB) celebrated the completion of Phase 1 of Mission Hospital’s Emergency Department and Trauma Center Expansion with the opening of the new dedicated pediatric area. The Emergency Department pediatric area will serve more than 25,000 patients annually, and includes 11 private exam rooms and a dedicated waiting room, apart from adult patients. The new area is specially designed to help ease children’s anxieties, with brightly painted walls and floors, and child-friendly furnishings.

RBB Architects Inc (RBB) has been awarded another CHW project. RBB will be responsible for the remodel of the Women and Children's floor and the renovation and expansion of the Emergency Department at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, California.

RBB Architects Inc (RBB) congratulates Olive Schroder, AIA, LEED AP on her recent American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) board certification. ACHA members work to improve healthcare architecture on behalf of the public. ACHA, the first organization to provide board certification for architects who practice as healthcare specialists, offers the certification exam to architects with five or more years of licensed experience with the majority of their practice in healthcare. Ms. Schroder joins her colleagues Joe Balbona, Joel Jaffe, and Carlos Amato in this honor.

Additionally RBB nominated clients Daughters of Charity Health System and The University of Southern California (USC) received “Best Client” awards.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has selected RBB for the new Lower Campus Outpatient Building. RBB's second project on the Hoag Memorial campus in Newport Beach will be a new 70,000 SF free standing outpatient building featuring cutting edge Gamma Knife radiation technology, imaging, a neuroscience center and oncology. The estimated construction cost is $22 million.

The 2004 Blue Crew, after finding themselves down by 6 runs after two innings, came through in the clutch to shut out #1 Cunningham Group Architects for the final 5 innings. RBB won with a final score of11-8. Congrats team!

RBB Architects Inc (RBB) in association with Shepley Bullfinch Richardson & Abbott (SBRA) has been selected to provide architectural services for the new $53 million Genomics Research Building on the University of California Riverside campus. The 110,000 SF building will provide the University's Genomics Institute with state-of-the-art research laboratories for faculty, researchers and support staff, positioning UCR at the forefront of the emerging genomics revolution. This new building will be the sixth project on the UCR campus for RBB.

The opening of the USC Healthcare Consultation Center II (HCCII) marks a new era in healthcare on the Health Sciences Campus. The 250,000-square-foot, seven-level structure was designed with the highest level of customer service in mind. Each floor offers core services such as patient waiting and reception areas, examination rooms, consultation areas and conference rooms. The HCC II features diagnostic imaging facilities, including MRI and CT scanning, physical therapy and a clinical laboratory. USC private practices in the building include internal medicine, orthopaedic surgery, psychiatry, anesthesia’s pain management program, neurology, neurosurgery, head and neck surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. A courtyard area spans between the HCC and HCC II, with a walkway entrance to USC University Hospital and its parking structure.

RBB has been selected as executive architect for the proposed relocation of the UCLA Medical Center Clinical Laboratory. The project will relocate the medical center clinical lab operations that now occupy areas of the Center for the Health Sciences (CHS) South Tower that are scheduled for renovation. The new 28,000 GSF facility will relocate these operations to an area above Parking Structure I along Gayley Avenue to the west of the 200 Medical Plaza building that RBB is currently working in. Construction cost is estimated at approximately $15 million.
