Mercy Medical Center Merced - Replacement Hospital

Mercy Medical Center Merced
Replacement Hospital

RBB was commissioned by Catholic Healthcare West to provide a multi-phase master plan, design and construction services to the Mercy Medical Center campus in Merced. The $247 million, 270,000 SF replacement hospital more than doubles the patient capacity and will offer services not currently available in Merced, including trauma care and future invasive cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery.

RBB's approach to planning was designed to facilitate patient flow and work processes utilizing a Lean design philosophy to eliminate waste. Through space-efficient planning and programming strategies, RBB's design for Mercy Medical Center Merced Replacement Hospital saved the client $30 million in construction costs, and will result in improved revenue of $10 million a year.

The hospital was completed using an Integrated Project Delivery system in which a negotiated GMP contract was established and the team evolved with the participation of design assist trades led by the general contractor and the PM-CM. An accelerated construction schedule allowed the facility to begin serving the community in April 2010.

Mercy Medical Center Merced received a 2009 AIA Design Award.
